What Firearm is the best firearm to use?

I have been shooting most of my life and have seen it all. From working my families range in Las Vegas, to becoming an instructor, my time around firearms has been quite a ride. Throughout the years around firearms one question that I have heard over and over  is what firearm is the best firearm to use? It is not an easy question to answer but I will do my best to provide some insight into what I now know.

The firearms industry has an unwavering degree of selections when it comes to choosing the best firearm. With every year that passes by it seems new and more innovated guns are developed and the guns that were once considered to be the best are now just relics without a purpose. Although some firearms withstand the test of time, it is inevitable that most firearms will be obsolete whether by design or performance. So how can anyone truly pick the best firearm? What is the best firearm? How is that measured and how can we as consumers stay on top of the evolution of the best firearms to use? Let me answer from my experience.

Identifying the "best" firearm to use is simply a matter of opinion and preference. While it is true that there are some obvious reasons why a firearm may be better than another, at the end of the day it is all about shooter preference. For instance, some firearm grip angles are steeper than others which may lead one to prefer this over another. Some firearm actions flow smoothly through the shooters hands and some firearm profiles are slimmer. Some firearms are literally hand cannons! Do you feel lucky punk? Well.... So with all these different characteristics, what best firearm to use truly comes down to is if a shooter is happy with their firearm and can they perform with their firearm. So best is never really a quantifiable standard within all the selections we have in firearms. It is more of a what fits best for me. I have shot so many guns and even my preferences have changed. I used to be a complete anti-Glock shooter and now it is almost what I shoot exclusively. My Glock is my duty pistol, my training pistol and I own several. So best really boils down to preference. I think what most people are truly asking when they ask what firearm is best to use, is what firearm should I buy? I completely understand this and have a great formula to use that can help with the purchasing of a firearm.

Experienced shooters know this and so this blog, although open to all, is definitely geared toward those who are still shopping and asking the question, what is the best firearm to use? Here is my advice to anyone who is not quite sure on what they want to buy. These are the most basic questions to ask yourself but they will guide you toward what you buy. The first question that needs to be answered is what is the firearm going to be used for? Is it for self defense, for a concealed carry option, for fun, or just to have around the home? I hear most commonly for self defense, but that still leaves a wide gap between what to buy as any firearm can be used for self defense. So let's continue to the next question which is what is your budget? Let's be realistic, not everyone are Dan Bilzerian with a safe full of every firearm known to man. Lucky. So have an honest budget for yourself and stick to it. Firearms are expensive and once you purchase one there are no returns, it is yours to keep.

Lastly, what feels comfortable. I always suggest that people go to the range and try out different calibers, pistols and sizes to get a well rounded idea in what they feel comfortable shooting. I can tell you right now, when I first got into firearms I did not follow this script and bought firearms that I eventually sold after a few months of owning them. So take the time to get familiar with various types of firearms. Do your research. Look at after market product availability, look at calibers and choose a firearm that will not be short on ammo selections. Understand the applications for your firearm ex. picking a firearm that may have a smaller signature for concealed carry. Really dive into the nuisances and decide what best means to you. I was an anti-Glock guy for a long time and it was because my first Glock experience was with an altered custom Glock. At the time I was looking for a duty pistol and this Glock had a trigger job that a swift wind would set off. Of course I did not like it. I thought it was dangerous and at the time did not feel confident in using that as my duty carry. Now, my Glock 17 is with me everywhere I go.
